  • If you have lost some teeth or an entire dental arch, dentures can be used to replace the function and appearance of your natural teeth. Our dentist creates comfortable, natural-looking dentures and spends time on-site in the office discussing all options. Dentures are the way to go if you want a removable solution to restore your smile.

It is essential to replace one or more missing teeth. If left untreated, chewing and speaking are affected because the teeth on either side of the gap can be placed under additional stress, and the bite can become misaligned. Loss of teeth and bone can also cause your face to look saggy and old, and you may lose even more teeth.

  • Full Dentures replace a complete arch when all teeth are missing. A full set of teeth is usually made of resin, with a gum-matched acrylic plastic base colour to fit your gums. Your Waitata Shores Dental dentists will take precise measurements of your mouth and then pass them on to our dental technicians, who will custom-make your dentures to fit your gums and jawbone perfectly. Your dentist will ensure your dentures are comfortable and advise you on how best to clean them and provide a good fit.

Partial Dentures replace one or more teeth and are used when natural teeth are still present. Dentures are custom-made to fill the gaps between your remaining teeth. These are attached to a metal frame called a partial metal denture or flexible Denture called valplast that can be made for a single front tooth as it has no metal in it. Partial Denture has an extension that attaches to your natural teeth to provide support.

Immediate Denture is made when you undergo extraction of your front teeth. As soon as the teeth are removed, the Denture is fitted, so you don’t have to go out of the office without any missing front teeth. As bone shrinks after the teeth are removed over a period of time, your immediate Denture will need to become loose in the fit. It will require a process called Relining/Rebasing, in which a layer of material is added to make the fit better. Depending on the extent of your bone shrinkage, you may need one or two reline/rebase appointments.

  • How to look after your dentures?

Dentures should be cared for like natural teeth. Plaque can form on your dentures, like on your natural teeth, putting you at risk for gum disease.

We recommend removing and cleaning them thoroughly with a soft brush for removable dentures. Then rinse off and soak in denture cleanser overnight.

Avoid eating anything very hard or sticky.

Also, remember to clean your mouth by gently massaging your gums, cleaning your tongue with a soft brush, and using mouthwash.
